What Are the Differences Between Acid Reflux and GERD?
8/1/2023
Most adults hear the words “GERD” and “acid reflux” and wonder if there is a difference or if they are the same. Generally, the two may seem to produce the same primary symptom — heartburn. There is a little more to it than simply heartburn, though. What, exactly, are the differences between GERD and acid reflux?
The gastroenterologists at Gastroenterology Associates can help you comprehend the differences between the numerous gastro conditions so you can give attention to your GI and overall health. Our Baton Rouge, LA digestive health specialists want you to feel confident enough about your health to make decisions that are right for you.
What causes acid reflux?
When swallowing, your food and/or drink will move from your esophagus to your stomach through the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). Sometimes, however, the lower esophageal sphincter doesn’t close fully, allowing the acid formed during this step to move back into the esophagus. This acid reflux leads to the common feeling of “heartburn” many people have.
There are various reasons the LES won’t close all the way. This is generally because of a loss of strength in an individual’s LES. Some causes of this include:
- Too much caffeine
- Alcohol
- A diet high in spicy and fatty foods
- A high-fat, low-fiber diet
- Obesity
- Cigarette smoking or other tobacco use
- Specific medications
Acid reflux vs. GERD
If you experience heartburn a few times or more a week or if acid reflux medications don’t reduce your acid reflux, you may have GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease).
Our Gastroenterology Associates team members will help you understand these symptoms and determine if you are experiencing GERD or another condition. It could take some trial and error to find a treatment that helps alleviate GERD or acid reflux symptoms; however, our team of providers is ready to help you along the way.
How can GERD be treated?
When seeking GERD treatment in Baton Rouge, LA, there are several treatment methods we can try. We will begin by reviewing your current medications and general health to determine if we should adjust your daily medications. Some other common changes we may recommend include:
- Sleeping elevated
- Remain upright after each meal and don’t eat three hours before bedtime
- Adjust your diet, including high-fiber foods and steering clear of citrus or high-fat and spicy foods
- Eat more slowly
- Lose weight if suggested by your provider
- Reduce how much caffeine you drink
If you do not experience relief after using one or more of these methods, we have other treatment protocols you may consider. Some options include prescription-strength antacids or, typically as a last resort, surgery.
