What is anorectal manometry?

Anorectal manometry is an exam to judge the muscles' reflexes and strength necessary for performing a typical bowel movement. The procedure is commonly performed on individuals battling constipation or fecal incontinence. The test analyzes the tension of the anal sphincter muscles, the feeling in the rectum, and the reflexes of the colon muscles. If you need an anorectal manometry exam in Baton Rouge, LA, you can find a GI specialist who can perform this exam at Gastroenterology Associates.

How can I get ready for anorectal manometry?

You must “empty” your large intestine before the procedure. This can be done using a laxative drink and abstaining from food the day before your test. Our providers will go over in detail the preparations you should undergo before your anorectal manometry to ensure a safe and smooth procedure.

You will not be required to undergo sedation throughout the test. Before we begin, you will be asked to lie on your side, and a Gastroenterology Associates provider will gradually insert a small flexible pipe through your anal sphincter and into the rectum. You may feel slight discomfort during this process. Calculations will be taken according to the reaction of your interior muscles and explained by your gastroenterologist. The exam typically takes between 10 – 20 minutes. Directly after the exam, we can discuss the outcome, and then you can return to your normal diet and daily routine.

Is anorectal manometry safe?

Anorectal manometry is a low-risk procedure that is unlikely to cause pain. While difficulties are unusual, some potential risks could include puncture (tearing) of the rectum, bleeding, and hardware failure. If you are averse to latex, you should notify your provider before the exam.
